Precision CNC Machining for a Next-Generation Electric Motor Component

Recently, our team successfully manufactured a critical aluminium component for a next-generation electric motor developed by an emerging startup company.

Project Background

A startup company working on an innovative electric motor technology received a project order from a Japanese company. As part of the motor assembly, they required a high-precision aluminium component that plays an important role in the motor structure and performance.

The startup approached Zetford with only a reference part image and design details, asking if we could manufacture the component with high accuracy and excellent surface finish.

Material & Machining Requirements

The component had several challenging requirements:

  • Material: Aluminium 6061
  • Machining Type: Precision CNC Machining
  • Machine Used: Vertical Machining Center (VMC)
  • Axis Requirement: Ideally suited for 4-axis machining
  • Part Complexity: Circular body with multiple external features and mounting points
  • Tolerance & Finish: High precision with premium surface finish

Because of the geometry and machining sequence, this type of component is typically produced using 4-axis CNC machining. It is also considered a critical component, and many manufacturers avoid running such parts during night shifts due to the complexity involved.

Our Engineering Approach

Our production team carefully evaluated the part and made a strategic decision.

Although the component was ideally designed for 4-axis machining, setting up and programming the 4th axis would take additional setup time. Since our team was already running production on a 3-axis VMC, we planned an optimized machining strategy to produce the component efficiently using the 3-axis machine itself.

This required:

  • Smart fixture planning
  • Multiple precise setups
  • Careful tool path programming
  • Strict process control

Through our team's experience in CNC machining, we successfully manufactured the component entirely on a 3-axis VMC machine.
